WRENTHAM – Land rich Boston-area colleges are interested in relocating to the suburbs, according to The Sun Chronicle.
Wrentham selectman Michael Carroll told fellow board members Tuesday that he had learned of the interest from state Rep. Daniel Winslow, R-Norfolk.
“He told me apparently colleges in Boston are land rich. Their real estate is worth more than when they acquired it,” Carroll said of Winslow. One or more colleges have looked at some state facilities, the selectman said.
Winslow, the newspaper said, suggested the Wrentham Developmental Center, a state mental health facility.
“Potentially they may want to sell their land and relocate to an area like this and build a new campus,” Carroll said. “It could be a major economic development; it could be a major cultural development in town.”
The developmental center is still active; it is expected to close “years from now” as clients are relocated to residential housing in local communities or die.
Carroll suggested forming a committee to study the possibility of future uses along with Norfolk, which includes some portion of the center as well. Other selectman said it would be premature.
